Stephanie Ray was a rules student contending for internships when she became aware she is probably not designed for the profession’s traditional wardrobe. “I’d interview and become holding my coat and wear it at the previous second because I didn’t feel great in it,” she says. Despite having zero design experience, Ray seized after her dependence on fresher, more flexible bits and Grayes was created. She moved back again to Toronto after legislation school and started out gathering the info and know-how required to get started on her own fashion lines. “It had been definitely a risk, but I understood it was the right decision,” she says.
Grayes was developed in 2016 with a few basic closet staples, like tapered pencil jeans and the sharply designed blazer dress, offered only in dark-colored. This year she’s branched further into habits and textures, adding natural plaids, greys, ribbons and even camouflage to the typical pinstripes the brand unveiled shortly after starting.
The pieces remain conservative–skirt hemlines are nice, and overcoats offer lots of coverage–but they have a distinctly fresh and sharper feel than the original Clinton-esque pantsuits of yore. The best compliment Ray will get is when women notify her they wear their Grayes workwear parts off duty. As it happens that a clothing collection staple is merely that, whatever day of the week it is.
